let’s talk LOVES ME

Monday, August 31st, 2009

All right, everybody.  Today is the last day of August, which means you’ve had nearly a month to get your hands on a copy of LOVES ME, LOVES ME KNOT & read all about Jenna & Gage.

You have read it by now, haven’t you?

So as promised, I thought we would take a day to discuss the book.

Consider this an “ask me anything” day.  Any questions you have…any comments on the story…

(But they better be nice ones, or Mistress Heidi will make you sorry. )

firefly Pictures, Images and PhotosI am also curious to know if you all found the Firefly reference I mentioned a few weeks ago…

What made Darling Laura think, Oh, no, she didn’t!

And so much more!

So come on, everybody…let’s talk LOVES ME & see where the day takes us.

super Sunday

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

Happy Sunday, everyone!  I hope you’ve all had a good week…one slightly less hectic & frazzled than mine would be nice.

Let’s begin with what I’m sure you’ve all been waiting for:  the prize announcement for Gena Showalter’s third-week guest blog, where she was giving away an autographed copy of the third book in her “Lords of the Underworld” series, THE DARKEST PLEASURE.

  Jane!!!

Congratulations, Jane!  Please contact me with your full name & mailing information, & I’ll pass it along to Gena so she can send out your book.

And speaking of Gena’s giveaways, I still haven’t heard from last week’s winners Laura J. & Kimberly.  If you guys want your books—& I know you do —be sure to send me your addresses so I can forward them to Gena!

As many of you know—& those of you who are on Facebook, Twitter, etc. know more than the rest —my life has been wicked crazy lately.   I will catch you all up soon, I promise.  But it’s sort of impossible for me to list a bunch of things I’m grateful for this week without mentioning a lot of what’s going on.

Which means I’m going to take a nice, big step back, finish dealing with the current crises in my life, & let the rest of you have a mini Out of the Cage Night (Super Sunday-style) here in The Dungeon.

Catch us up…  What’s been going on in your life lately?  What exciting events did you encounter this week?  What are you especially thankful for at the moment?

Mistress Heidi & I want to hear all about it. And then, we want you to…

Is it just me, or does the guy on this cover look a lot like James Denton of Desperate Housewives fame?

Which of course puts me in the mood for a bit of J.D. beefcake…

a Friday funny

Friday, August 28th, 2009

I had to wait a while after the release of LOVES ME, LOVES ME KNOT to post this, because even though it’s ROTFLMAO hysterical, I did NOT want you to have this running through your head as a possible theme song to Gage’s & Jenna’s story.

Laura, dear—I know you’re planning some “what songs should make up the playlist for LOVES ME, LOVES ME KNOT” fun on HappyBookers, but please don’t let this one become a contender, okay?

Gone Crazy Pictures, Images and PhotosIn case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been a little sketchy this week in my appearances both here & at Must Love Yarn.  Not to mention Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, my e-mail, telephone, smoke signals, bull horn…

Seriously, it has been a couple of the most insane days ever.  And it’s not over yet.!  But I don’t even have the energy to fill you in just yet, so that will have to wait.

Just know that even though I may miss a day here or there, I am still around & will be again soon.  I swear I’ll catch up!  And posts for tomorrow, Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday are already scheduled, so we’re safe there.  It’s only Saturday, Sunday, & later next week that we may be in trouble.

Crazy Pictures, Images and PhotosBut with any luck, thinks may have settled down a bit by then & I’ll be able to fill you in on the craziness that is my life.

If not, you can reach me at 1313 Looney Bin Lane, Insanityville, USA.

couch potatoe Pictures, Images and PhotosWord of the Week:  YouTuber — One who spends so much time browsing YouTube videos that they have metaphorically taken root, in the manner of a potato or other root vegetable.  The couch potato of the new millennium.

A couple of new reviews have come in for LOVES ME, LOVES ME KNOT recently that I’ve been wanting to share.

First is one from our own occasional Darling, Patti Fischer, who says:

“Deliciously funny and wickedly delightful from beginning to end, Heidi Betts’s Loves Me, Loves Me Knot is a story I highly recommend you put to the top of your “must have” list.”

To read the full review, visit Romance Reviews Today.

And then we have one from Beautiful Reads, who gave Jenna and Gage 5 stars & said:

Loves Me, Loves Me Knot is a sweet, funny and, in parts, poignant story. If you are looking for something slightly different, then pick up this book today.”

They also just gave TANGLED UP IN LOVE 5 stars & this wonderful review:

Tangled Up in Love was an awesome and playful read. I admit to not knowing a lot about knitting, but reading this book makes me want to add it to my list of things to learn sometime. The tension between Ronnie and Dylan was enchanting, and I anxiously awaited each move that they made. I would recommend adding this great book to your summer reading list.”

To read the full review for LOVES ME, LOVES ME KNOT, visit Beautiful Reads here.  For the full review of TANGLED UP IN LOVE, visit here.

And last but not least, I also just received a new review for REAL MEN LAST ALL NIGHT from Talia Ricci of Joyfully Reviewed:

“Heidi Betts is a new writer on the erotic front. I adore her Silhouette releases and thought “Wanted: A Real Man” was superb. Ms. Betts is quickly making a name for herself and if this novella is any indication of her talent, she should be around a very long time.”

The full review for that one can be read here.

Cool beans, huh?  All in all, I’d say we’re doing very well.  And I couldn’t be happier.

Top Ten Tuesday

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

It’s been a while since we’ve played around with a Top Ten list here in The Dungeon, so let’s do a fun one, shall we?
Me & dirty Pictures, Images and Photos

Top Ten Things That Sound Dirty But Aren’t

(okay, 14…I thought of too many )

14.  Kagagoogoo

13.  Oingo-Boingo

12.  Velvet Underground

11.  niblick (An old-fashioned golf club with an iron head, the face of which has the greatest slope of all the irons, for hitting the ball with maximum loft; a.k.a. a nine-iron.  Geez, even the definition sounds a little dirty. )

10.  Hancock

9.  ballast

8.  coming & going

7.  Shank & Tittle (The name of a sports clothing/equipment company—seen on the side of a truck on the way to RWA in D.C.)

6.  spelunking

5.  The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare

4.  cloaca  (The common cavity into which the intestinal, genital, and urinary tracts open in vertebrates such as fish, reptiles, birds, and some primitive mammals.  Okay, so by definition, that one is kind of dirty. )

3.  crank shaft

2.  Phuket, Thailand (actually pronounced Poo-ket, but I know what you were thinking. )

1.  acute angina (Why, thank you…I think.)

Can you think of any I missed?

getting hot & bothered with Gena Showalter

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Please join me in welcoming Gena Showalter back to The Dungeon.  This is her final visit with us, & Mistress Heidi is sad because Gena fits in so very well here.

However, Gena has decided to talk about hot, sexy, half-naked men, & that makes Mistress Heidi happy.

So let’s see what she has to say…

###

When I was told I could talk about anything I wanted, I thought, Free rein, baby! Sweet!

Then I thought, Wait. What should I talk about? My brain remained as blank a screen as the Word doc I’d just opened up on my computer.

Then I thought, What’s wrong with me? I’ve lost my spark. Panic set in.

I thought, Okay, I can do this. Last blog post I did for someone featured half-naked men.

Then I grinned. Half-naked men. Score! Yep, I’ll talk about those.  Or, more specifically, my favorite romance novel heroes.

Let’s start with Lachlan from A Hunger Like No Other by the amazing Kresley Cole. (Side note: He’s mine, ladies. Touch him and you could get cut. ) Why do I love him? The man is dark and powerful, and when chained, he is willing to claw and chew his own leg off to reach the heroine. Yes, the leg grows back. But still. What a gesture! I am shivering even now.

Then there’s Colin from Demon Moon by the fabulous Meljean Brook. HOTNESS!   He is a vampire and unimaginably beautiful. I love that he knows he’s beautiful. I love that he isn’t afraid to admit it. I love how badly he craves the heroine, and I love that he can kill his enemies quickly and easily. Fine, I just love him. Did I mention the hotness?

There’s Nate from the upcoming SEALed And Delivered by the magnificent Jill Monroe. Two words: Navy SEAL. I love me some military men. And this one is all man. He’s not afraid to rough it, he’ll complete a mission even when injured, and he will protect the heroine with his life. Sign me up and have him delivered half naked immediately!

There’s my darling Hercules from Warrior Rising by the unstoppable PC Cast. This dangerous warrior has a dark force working inside him, a beast that takes over whenever he fights. Yep, there goes another shiver. All that power at your fingertips . . . just imagine it! Delicious! And that fact that he’ll be gentle with the heroine, and only the heroine . . . Yes!

And I must, must, must mention Lucas from Slave to Sensation by the wonderful Nalini Singh. He is a shapeshifter and all scrumptious animal on the inside. One look from him, and a woman will melt—right onto his bed.

Yes, I have a thing for warriors. Not to mention the “beauty and the beast” plotline. Which is probably why I fell in love with Sabin from THE DARKEST WHISPER the minute he stepped onto the page. He is an immortal warrior possessed by the demon of Doubt, and he has always placed victory on the battlefield before love. Watching him fall in love and direct all that fierceness at one woman was like eating mind candy. I loved every minute with him! Hard and hot, beautiful and beastly, he is everything I want in a romance novel hero. I’m considering writing a sequel, killing off the heroine, and pairing him with a girl named Gina. Or Jeanna. Just saying.

So who are some of your favorite romance novel heroes?

###

Thank you, Gena!  I can’t wait to hear what fabulous discussion & rivalry that question brings up.    (I have to warn you, it could get ugly.  Our  Darlings tend to be very possessive of their hot-bodied hunks. )

And remember, ladies, if you’re not too violent, after today’s visit, Gena will pick a third & final winner for her guest blog giveaway—an autographed copy of Book #3 of her “Lords of the Underworld” series, THE DARKEST PLEASURE.

U.S. residents only, please, but everyone is welcome to throw their favorite romance novel hottie into the ring.

Let the hotness begin!   I’ve got a fruity drink ready to keep me cool.

super Sunday

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Since I know you’ve been on pins & needles all week waiting for this, allow me to get the best part of today’s post out of the way…naming the winners of Gena Showalter’s second-week guest blog giveaway.  That’s right, I said winners. Gena very generously drew two names from all of the comments to her interview last week & offered to send an autographed copy of THE DARKEST KISS to each.

  Kimberly & Laura J.!!!

Congratulations, ladies!  Please contact me with your full names & mailing information & I’ll pass it along to Gena so she can get your wonderful prizes out to you.

So what are we all feeling super-grateful for this week?  Anything?  Anything?

I’m thankful this week that it looks as though my shower will soon have a new enclosure, as the plumber called & said he thinks he found “just what we’ve been looking for.”  This is not a major job, simply the replacement of a cruddy, falling-apart shower lining with a new, less cruddy & not-falling-apart one.  You see, a few winters ago, we had a lot of trouble with frozen pipes & I kind of used a hair dryer & space heater to thaw them.  Unfortunately, intense heat is apparently not the greatest thing to put in close proximity to a plastic wall liner & the thing sort of warped a little.  Nothing I couldn’t fix with duct tape (have I mentioned that I am the Duct Tape Queen? ), but even that gets old after a while.  (And,  yes, we are talking about a strip—or two —of silver duct tape along the edges of an otherwise white panel.  Hey, I didn’t say it was pretty, just functional.

I am also excited to finally have the last picture I wanted to share with you from the RWA conference in Washington, D.C.  You remember the little devil horns I wore for the Literacy Autographing Wednesday night, right?  Well, I am now able to share with you the other alter-ego who accompanied me to Nationals this year.  I give you Sometimes Naughty/Sometimes Nice:

I also forgot to mention the wonderful quote that was on the notepads in all of the Marriott hotel rooms at the conference:  Leave a trail of genius.  I just love that.  (Which is why I stole a bunch to bring home with me.  Shhh—at least it wasn’t a robe or the light fixtures. )

Aside from that, it has been a fairly mundane, with nothing much either good or bad going on.  Just the usual routine of wake up, feed the cats, try to exercise, try to write, go to bed, wake up, feed the cats…   I just wish I were writing more & feeding less.

All right, your turn.  Anything you care to share with the world this week?

Oh, & don’t forget that the lovely Gena will be with us again tomorrow, to guest blog for the third & final time.  I’m going to miss her terrific sense of humor, but her post is a good one, so you don’t want to miss it.

I know because I got a sneak peek while putting it together.  Heheheh.

sexy Saturday

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

I watched Shooter recently, which was just an awesome action/adventure movie.  I love this sort of thing—lots of tension, bullets flying, even a wee bit of romance.

And did I mention revenge? Oh, I love the revenge plots.  Those of you who have read LOVES ME, LOVES ME KNOT probably already noticed that about me.

So I am suddenly on a very big Mark Wahlberg kick.  I think I may even feel a viewing of Four Brothers coming on.  (Another very big shoot-’em-up vengeance flick. Hehe.)

Which means The Dungeon is just screaming for a bit of Mark Walhberg beefcake.  (And I think I may have to watch Shooter again soon. *g*)

And we forget noth… Huh? Wait, what were we talking about?

poll of the week

vampire fangs Pictures, Images and PhotosAs you know, I’ve begun working on yet another Book That Shall Not Be Named…a.k.a. my first paranormal romance for Kensington Brava.  And so far, so good.  (I think. )

But here’s where I’m running into a bit of trouble:

I decided on my character names rather early on—Connor Drake & Jillian Parker.  Okay, good, no problem there.

Until I realized that I used the name Connor once before, in my Silhouette Desire SEVEN-YEAR SEDUCTIONHmm. So suddenly I find myself stumbling over the letters every time I go to type it into the story, as though my brain & fingers are trying to tell me something.

So here’s my question:

As readers, would it bother you if I used the same hero name for this story as in one of my earlier books, or are you okay with it?

And if I do change it, what should I change it to?  I’m thinking Colin, since I need it to be an old Irish name & really prefer to keep the letter C.  (I’m trying to avoid overusing certain letters from other names that appear in this book. )

Of course, if I do go with Colin, I’ll have a lot of ls & is going on in both the hero’s & heroine’s names—Colin/Jillian, Jillian/Colin…we’re talking a whole new issue possibly deserving of a poll.

But first thing’s first…

more Desire news

Photobucket

An interesting thing happened to me last week.  My agent called & said, “I know you told me not to sell anymore books for you for a while…”

Yes, indeed, I did say this.  Yes, I know it probably sounds insane & may be the first time an author has ever taken her agent aside & told him/her, “You’re doing too good a job.  Stop now.  Take a break, you deserve it.”  But I am only one person, & because of the number of incredible things that have happened in my career lately, the sheer number of publishers who are expecting multiple books from me in the very near future, a line had to be drawn.

(That being said, if any fabulous editors or Hollywood film directors are reading this & are interested in my work in almost any capacity, I am still totally open to discussion, so—CALL ME! )

Any-hoo…

“But,” he continues, my Desire editor called & wants me to do the final book in a new six-book continuity series that will be released the last half of 2010—even before my next new return-to-Desire stand-alone is released.  Mine would be a secret baby story, & it has something to do with a food & wine festival in Colorado.

Can you see me bouncing in my seat? Bouncing Pictures, Images and Photos

I mean, A.) it’s a continuity, & as difficult as they can sometimes be to write (soooo many details & soooo much to keep straight, especially in the last he Pictures, Images and Photosbook where I have to juggle not only my own hero & heroine & storyline, but five others, as well), & B.) do you know how much I love food shows?  I have absolutely no idea yet how much of the story will revolve around food & wine, but picture this:  All those hours spent watching Top Chef, Iron Chef America, & Hell’s Kitchen can now be called RESEARCH!!!

Ah, the life of a writer.  Gotta love it. write Pictures, Images and Photos

The only problem was, where to stick it?  (And I mean that in the nicest way possible, I swear. )  My schedule is so crowded right now, & with the continuity coming out July through December 2010, the book would have to be written pretty darn soon.  Figuring out the details took a bit of work, but we were finally able to (hopefully) fit it in between the two vampire books for Brava.

I’ve gotta hustle, but I’m sooooo excited about being involved in this series.  It’s going to be called—at least tentatively—”Dynasties:  The Jarrods.”  And I think my characters’ names are Trevor & Haylie, but I’ll have to wait to get the bible to find out more details.

Taste of Desire Pictures, Images and Photos

And just this once, I think I should forgive my overachieving agent for not following a direct order.

But that’s it—just this once, no more!

an interview with Gena Showalter

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Once again, I’m thrilled to welcome the sweet & delightful Gena Showalter to The Dungeon.

This week, we get to torture her with a few of our very favorite, very pressing interview questions.  Let’s see how she did…

What is your favorite color? Blue

Favorite song? That changes all the time, but right now it’s “Fading” by Decyfer Down

Favorite movie? Anything with a half-dressed (or naked, I’m not picky) Ryan Reynolds (Note from Heidi:  Amen, sister!)

And of course, favorite book? A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole. This book introduced me to her amazing world of Lore (valkyries, vampires, witches, werewolves, demons and more) and characters that are so real I can actually hear them while I’m reading.  And I like what I hear.  Especially from the men.   I don’t want to get all they-belong-to-me and everything, but really, THEY BELONG TO ME.

What are you currently reading, & how are you enjoying it? SEALed and Delivered by Jill Monroe. She’s my critique partner and I have to say, this is my favorite of all her books. A sexy Navy SEAL paired with a girly-girl who hates roughing it. Hell, yeah! Sexual tension at its best! I’m loving every word.

Name three books on your TBR pile that you can’t wait to read. The Avenger by PC Cast, Lover Avenged by JR Ward, and Dragons Prefer Blondes by Candace Havens.

What was the first book in your chosen genre that you remember reading, or that made you want to write the same? Warrior’s Woman by Johanna Lindsay. That was my first paranormal romance and baby, I was hooked. I ate up every word, then immediately started reading again for a second helping. Alpha warriors, a woman who was just as strong, sexual tension that sizzled . . .yes, yes and yes.

What do you think of Heidi? She’s great, right? An absolute doll!!

How did you get started writing? Reading was my biggest passion. I had all these stories of my own floating around in my head, and pretty soon, writing them down was the only thing I could see myself doing for the rest of my life. So I sat down and gave it a shot. No one thought I could do it, and with good reason. I mean, I’d dropped out of college three times and had been voted worst employee ever several times. But I fell in love with the process and committed myself to doing whatever was necessary to succeed.

Tell us a little bit about your first sale. I had written for over two years and had six manuscripts under my belt when I finally bagged an agent. We didn’t sell right away, though. Took us two years and countless rejections before HQN decided to buy The Stone Prince. At the time, the phones were down and my now-editor could only fax my agent. Before they could hook up, though, my editor went on vacation. Right before she got back, my agent went on vacation. I had to wait writhing in agony patiently for two weeks before the two connected and the offer was officially made.

Fill in the blank—If you like [blank], you’ll love Gena Showalter! That’s like loading the gun and putting it right in my hands  But here was my thought process while answering this question: If you like to laugh (not everyone has the same sense of humor), to cry (sounds too depressing), white hot romance (right track but that could describe a lot of authors), immortal warriors (too limiting perhaps), reading (too egotistical) doing stuff, you’ll love Gena Showalter.

Tell us about THE DARKEST WHISPER and why we’ll love every word. Here’s the blurb for it:

He is the keeper of Doubt and his entire world’s about to be rocked.

Bound by the demon of doubt, Sabin unintentionally destroys even the most confident of lovers. So the immortal warrior spends his time on the battlefield instead of the bedroom, victory his only concern…until he meets Gwendolyn the Timid. One taste of the beautiful redhead, and he craves more.

Gwen, an immortal herself, always thought she’d fall for a kind human who wouldn’t rouse her darker side. But when Sabin frees her from prison, battling their enemies for the claim to Pandora’s box turns out to be nothing compared to the battle Sabin and Gwen will wage against love…

Whether you meant to do it or not, you’ve totally sucked me into the “Lords of the Underworld” and I’m afraid I’m going to have to do something that I have never done with a guest author before. I’m going to have to get out my whip and put on my thigh-high black leather dominatrix boots for a moment and insist—absolutely insist—that you tell me when Paris’s story will be out. If you don’t…well, just ask anyone who’s incited Mistress Heidi’s wrath and not lived to tell about it!   LOL Thank you! His storyline finally came to me, but I have a lot of seeds to plant in the upcoming “Lord” books before I can do it. Otherwise, it won’t work. He’s a pretty special character to me, and I want to do it right. (Note from Mistress Heidi:  This does not please us.  Yes, we’re happy you’ll be working on his story & that we’ll get to read about him eventually.  But really…we have to wait?  We do not like to wait.  We do not wait peacefully.  Was it your intention to torture us the way demons torture your heroes?  Cruel, very cruel—but at least cruelty is something we understand & respect. )

If your plane crashed in the Andes, would you convince the other survivors to eat Heidi first or last? That’s a tough question to answer since just before impact I would have accidentally slipped into a time warp and traveled back to a sexy warlord’s bed.  (Further intrusive note from Heidi:  I have to say, I think that is the best answer we’ve ever gotten to that question.  Will you let me time travel with you?  Into a different, but equally sexy warlord’s bed, of course.   Pretty please, with a cherry on top? )

If you could write anything—whether in the same genre/sub-genre as you’re writing now or another—what would it be? I love love love what I’m writing now. Paranormal romance, contemporary romance and young adult romance. I don’t think I’ll ever want to change that. Relationships fascinate me. And yeah, maybe I kinda sorta like all those alpha warriors.

What are you currently working on? I’m working on THE DARKEST LIE, Gideon’s story, and it has been the toughest “Lords of the Underworld” manuscript to date. Gideon is possessed by the demon of Lies and cannot utter a single truth without severe consequences. Decoding Gideon Speak is basically killing me.

###

Thank you so much, Gena!  I think that may be the most fun I’ve ever had with a guest author interview, & I’m sure my Darlings of The Dungeon will agree.

And during her final visit next week—MONDAY, AUGUST 24TH—an autographed copy of “Lord of the Underworld” #3, THE DARKEST PLEASURE.
