baby bird update
Well, this is quite a surprising turn of events. The mama bird stayed on the nest all Friday night, but was gone Saturday. When I sneaked out to check on the babies...they were gone. All three of them, vanished. And they hadn't been pushed out, as far as I could tell. I had a blanket down to break their fall, just in case, but I also got down on the ground on my hands & knees to look. Nothing. The nest is empty & the mother robin hasn't been back.
I hope this means the babies were okay & the mother moved them to a safer place. But I really do suspect one or two of them didn't make it, so she might have taken them off & done something else with them.
Ew. Okay, I don't like to think about that sort of thing. The point is, mama & babies are all gone, which means they're no longer my responsibility. But I brought the nest inside, anyway, to keep any other birds from taking up residence. (My mother will love to use it for one of her educational units, & I really don't think that's the safest place for birds to be raising babies.)
